With a team of caregivers in a private residence, you’ll be taking care of my husband, a patient who is paralyzed with a fully functioning mind and who has feeling throughout his body. Features
- Hourly rate after training period is $26-$30. It can be higher based on competency, reliability, learning speed, etc. The training rate starts between $20-$22 based on experience; it increases quickly, provided you learn quickly/have good learning strategies. To make $30 or above, you must be able to perform all of the job duties listed on this page or have respiratory therapist experience.
- 1.5 times pay for overtime (more than 8 hrs/day) and for some holidays.
- Paid breaks.
- Paid sick leave (40 hours per year).
- Paid training is included. Applicants who have experience with trachs, g-tubes, ventilators, and hoyer lifts are preferred—but this experience is not required (training is provided).
- The job is 40 hours per week. Additional hours (day and night) are frequently available. We are not taking students.
- We use a rotating schedule. Shifts include a mix of:
– Morning: 4am to noon
– Day: shifts vary in length from 5 to 9 hours between 7:30am and 8pm.
– Night: 8pm to 4am
We typically book the schedule 1-2 months in advance to help you plan.
Vacation is unpaid but we are flexible in the amount you take, provided you can let us know in advance.
Job requirements
- Be fluent in English.
- Be serious about this patient’s care and be professional; even though he becomes close friends with his caregivers over time, he is not seeking companionship or entertainment. He works on his computer with eye-gaze technology most of the day and night.
- Due to the height of his bed, be a minimum of 5’4″ tall and be in good physical condition.
- Work a mix of shifts on weekdays, weeknights, weekend days, weekend nights, and holidays.
- Critical thinking skills are a must. You must be able to assess a situation and identify when procedure changes are needed and adapt to them.
- Have one of the following: caregiving experience outside of caring for a family member -OR- training or experience in the medical field.
Job duties
- Lead duties, such as training others and monitoring the patient’s day-to-day vitals and adjusting food/meds/tasks as needed, can be done during your shifts.
- Monitoring the patient while he is awake and asleep
- Interpreting the patient’s facial expression to identify his needs
- Rolling the patient, positioning patient, and getting him comfortable; you must be strong enough to be able to position him quickly
- Suctioning patient’s mouth & trach as needed to clear his airway
- Clearing rainout in vent tubing and positioning the vent on the patient
- Understanding equipment alarms and settings
- Positioning the patient’s laptop
- Using a letterboard for communication with the patient
- Moving the patient’s joints for range of motion
- Feeding and administering meds through a g-tube
- Performing percussion and lung care
- Cleaning of g-tube and trach tube areas
- Giving the patient sponge baths and skin care
- Cleaning up BMs
- Using medical machines and equipment, including: hoyer, power chair, hospital bed, nebulizers, ventilators, cough assists, percussors, suction machines, urinal, and eye-gaze communication equipment
- Placing the sling and transferring the patient to his wheelchair
- Prepping the patient’s meals, washing feeding equipment and breathing tubing and adaptors, and occasionally light housework
